BIO:
Alice has worked in sustainable development for over 20 years. She started her career in the emerging market investor, CDC, as a business analyst and then moved into a role where she was evaluating the social, environmental and economic impacts of the investments being made. She then developed specific policies in this area to guide future investments and advised fund managers and businesses on embedding them into their activities. In 2006 she joined Forum for the Future, the sustainable development charity, to head up their work on sustainable financial markets. She works both with Forum’s corporate partners and on cross-sector initiatives, with the aim of incentivising greater allocation of capital to sustainable activities and away from unsustainable ones. Particular areas of focus have been microfinance, adaptation, investment in clean technologies, investment in forests, voluntary carbon markets, sustainable private equity, and asset valuation techniques. Alice has an MA in Economics from Cambridge University and is a chartered accountant.
Interests:
I am interested in exploring the fundamental changes that are required at a number of levels and the barriers that are currently in place whether because of inadequate systems for valuation of natural and social capital, risk management that cannot envisage disruptive change, unsustainable consumption patterns, and incentive structures that lead to poor outcomes for society. In particular I am interested in the way in which the environment and poverty relate to each other, with the rich taking an ever-increasing share of ever-decreasing resources.
