Bio:
Sean Flannery is an investment management expert with twenty seven years of financial industry experience. He currently serves as the Senior Economic Advisor to the Massachusetts General Hospital Division of Health and Human Rights. He is also a Senior Research Fellow at the Harvard University Transnational Studies Initiative where he is conducting research on the role of global deregulation in the current financial crisis.
Until November of 2007 he served as Executive Vice President of State Street Corporation and Chief Investment Officer, Americas, for State Street Global Advisors (SSgA), the largest institutional investment manager in the world. Mr. Flannery’s responsibilities included management of over US$ 2 trillion in assets under management across cash, equity, currency and bond markets in the developed and emerging markets. He was also responsible for all research functions, including fundamental and quantitative investment disciplines.
As member of the Executive Management Group, he had responsibilities for business strategy and management of the firm, which has investment management teams in eleven locations around the world.
Mr. Flannery served on the Proxy Committee, Investment Committee and chaired the Technical Committee, which had oversight of investment strategies driven by quantitative models. He also worked extensively with over thirty central banks and played a critical role in the development and implementation of the Pan Asian Investment Fund, a transformative investment vehicle and approach sponsored by the Executive Meeting of East Asian Principals (EMEAP). He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Asian Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.
Mr. Flannery has lectured at leading universities and industry conferences on a great variety of investment and economic topics. He developed the State Street VGap, a pioneering measure of equity market volatility.
Earlier roles at SSgA included leading the Global Cash and Fixed Income business as well as directing the Product Engineering group. He also was a member of the Asset-Liability Committee for State Street Corporation. Prior to SSgA he was a senior portfolio manager at both Scudder, Stevens & Clark and PanAgora Asset Management.
Working on behalf of the Financial Services Volunteer Corps and in conjunction with USAID Mr. Flannery consulted on private equity investments for a capital markets strengthening project for the Kingdom of Morocco. He also serves on the Advisory Board of the Boston University Humphrey Fellowship Program, which fosters international understanding as part of the Fulbright International Educational Exchange.
Mr. Flannery has a long history of working toward better lives for poor and oppressed children on both a local and a global basis with a strong conviction that the rights of children include health, safety and education without regard to geographic or political boundaries. He currently serves as Senior Economic Advisor to the Massachusetts General Hospital Division of Global Health and Human Rights. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the US Fund for UNICEF- New England Region. In addition, Mr. Flannery chairs the Ryan Flannery Memorial Fund, established in memory of his son and funding youth-oriented activities and scholarships.
