The Network for Sustainable Financial Markets (SFM) and Sustainable Investment Professional Certification (SIPC) are very pleased to present a discussion with Catherine Howarth, Chief Executive of ShareAction “ Pension funds and climate risk” with a particular focus on ShareAction’s Green Light project and forthcoming report.
Green Light is an ambitious new three-year project from ShareAction which aims to turn major UK pension funds into climate-conscious investors, recognising and protecting against the enormous implications of climate change for pension savers’ best interests – both financial and non-financial. In October 2013, ShareAction will release a major report setting out what this means for pension funds in practice and detailing coherent, practical and effective ‘asks’ for pension funds.
As part of the research process for this report, ShareAction facilitated four workshops in June and July exploring key themes including how pension funds can measure and report their carbon risk exposure; possible approaches to fossil fuel stocks and other carbon-intensive holdings; the role pension funds can play in funding the transition to a low-carbon economy; and the actions funds could take to lobby for a more supportive public policy framework.
This discussion will present SFM members with the opportunity to hear the insights gleaned from the workshop series and offer their insights on suggested ‘asks’ for pension funds so as to help shape the final report.
ShareAction is a groundbreaking charity that promotes Responsible Investment by pension funds and fund managers. Bringing together leading charities, trade unions, faith groups and individual investors, our aim is to catalyse a shift at each level of the investment chain, so that Responsible Investment becomes the norm. Today, ShareAction is recognised in the UK as the leading NGO that monitors and engages with the investment industry.
Catherine Howarth is the Chief Executive of ShareAction having previously been the founder and lead organiser of West London Citizens. Earlier in her career she was Senior Researcher at the New Policy Institute. Catherine is a board member of Green Alliance. She was a Member Nominated Trustee of The Pensions Trust (the multi-employer pension scheme for the UK's not-for-profit sector) for five years until Spring 2013. She served for four years on The Pensions Trust's Investment Committee. In June 2011 Catherine was named a 'Rising Star of Corporate Governance' by Yale University's, Millstein Center. In 2013, Pensions Insight featured her as one of the 50 most influential people in pensions and in May 2011 Investment and Pensions Europe called her one of the 'top ten women in pensions'.
