Joseph Mariathasan is an independent consultant and investment specialist. He is Contributing Editor to Investments and Pensions Europe (IPE), responsible for the monthly investment column as well as investment related articles across all asset classes. He also writes for a number of other investment and finance journals. Joseph is a Director of Purbeck Advisers, a specialist placement firm currently working on a Cambodian private equity fund and an emerging markets fund of funds. He is also a consultant and advisor to the China focussed firm, Vermilion Partners, who offer a range of merchant banking and corporate advisory services to leading multinationals, Chinese companies and investors. He also has a close association with StratCom, a research-based strategy consultancy focussed on financial services.
Joseph has over 20 years experience in financial markets, having worked for Shell International, Kleinwort Benson, Aviva (Morley Fund Management), and GMO, in a variety of technical and senior management and business development roles. Joseph has extensive knowledge of risk management, derivatives, treasury, fixed interest and equity fund management. He has been responsible for setting up many new ventures and transactions including a number of innovative funds and large-scale derivative strategies for liability management. He is also an ex-Chairman of the “UK Asset and Liability Association”.
As well as directorships at fund management firms, Joseph has also been on the boards of investment funds for China and India.
Joseph has a first degree and a doctorate in Physics from Oxford University and has obtained a number of professional qualifications, including membership of The London Stock Exchange and Membership of the Association of Corporate Treasurers.
